2017年1月27日 · この病気は大脳の神経細胞が変性し、意志に反して体が動く舞踏運動や認知症などの症状が現れ、40歳前後に発症することが多いとされる。 母と兄がハンチントン病であったY子さんは年とともに不安がつのり、まだ30代だった10年前に遺伝子検査で発症の可能性を確かめようと、東京女子医科大学附属遺伝子医療センターを訪れた。 遺伝子医療センターでは遺伝子検査による発症前診断に当たり、「遺伝カウンセリング」を実施している。 遺伝子検査で変異が見つかった場合、想像しているよりも精神的動揺が大きくなる人がまれではないからだ。 そのときに必要なのが家族の支えである。 そこで、Y子さんの遺伝カウンセリングにはご主人にも参加してもらうことになった。
