It is distributed file-serving, if you like. This is 'peer-to- peer' (P2P) networking. I call it File Sharing 1.0. It works by trying to ensure that anything you download from your peers is also available for 'sharing' from your computer. Now to get more specific: BitTorrent is a step up: call it File Sharing 2.0.
