    Acute hypercapnia is a life-threatening emergency. If you don't treat it promptly, you could stop breathing, have a seizure, or go into a coma.

    Hypercapnia can make you feel irritable or dizzy. As it worsens, you may become confused, sleepy, and eventually pass out. If you notice any of these symptoms, call your doctor. You may need to go to the hospital.

    Don't try to treat hypercapnia on your own without instructions from your doctor. If you normally use supplemental oxygen, taking more could actually make the problem worse. When you have COPD, too much oxygen could cause you to lose the drive to breathe.
