List of ISO 3166 country codes. The International Organization for Standardization ( ISO) created and maintains the ISO 3166 standard – Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions. [1] . The ISO 3166 standard contains three parts:
ISO 3166-1 ( Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions – Part 1: Country codes) is a standard defining codes for the names of countries, dependent territories, and special areas of geographical interest. It is the first part of the ISO 3166 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization .
All 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two observer states are given a rank number. Largely unrecognised states not in ISO 3166-1 are included in the list in ranked order.
Overview. The nine world zones are generally organized geographically, with exceptions for political and historical alignment. Zone 1 uses an integrated numbering plan; four digits (1xxx) determine the area served in Canada, the United States and its territories, and much of the Caribbean.
