Huberman graduated from Henry M. Gunn High School in 1993. He received a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1998, an M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000, and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of California, Davisin 2004.

Huberman was an Assistant Professor of Neurobiology and Neuroscience at University of California, San Diego from 2011–2015, where his group pioneered the use of genetic tools for the study of the visual system function, development and disease.
