For the smaller set of symbols that is sufficient for English, see Help:IPA/English. Several rare IPA symbols are not included; these are found in the main IPA article or on the extensive IPA chart.

Only a handful of these special letters are needed for transcribing English. This is an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet ( IPA) for English-speaking Wikipedians. Its purpose is to explain the IPA's basic principles to English speakers.

For example, the transcription /i/ may be used for the vowel of sit, of seat, or at the end of city. A dictionary may not even be consistent between one edition and the next.
The system for doing this is outlined at Help:IPA/English, and the first instance should include a link to that page; for example: England ( / ˈɪŋɡlənd / ). This should be done using the template { { IPAc-en }}. The Wikipedia respelling system, using the { { respell }} template, can be used in addition to the IPA.
