In 2000, the construction of Kaohsiung Business Exhibition Center was completed. The center was run by a private sector from then until 13 March 2007. In May 2010, the city government took over the operation of the center.
The university was originally established as Kaohsiung Medical College in 1954 by the former mayor of Kaohsiung City, Chen Chi-chuan, and Tu Tsung-ming, the first Ph.D. of Medical Sciences in Taiwan.
