The game is set in the Burgundy region of High Medieval France. Each player takes on the role of an aristocrat, originally controlling a small princedom. While playing they aim to build settlements and powerful castles, practice trade along the river, exploit silver mines, and use the knowledge of travelers.
The Riverfolk expansion includes: A New Core Faction: The Riverfolk Company. A New Core Faction: The Lizard Cult. An Extra Vagabond. One Custom Card Holder For Each Player. Cooperative Scenarios. Rules for Bot Play. and Three Additional Vagabond Variants. This expansion now allows Root to be played with 1-6 players.
