5 天前 · The story of U.S. circulating coins began long before the opening of a national mint in 1792. Before national coinage, a mix of foreign and domestic coins circulated, both during the Colonial Period and in the years following the Revolutionary War.
Coins of the United States dollar – aside from those of the earlier Continental currency – were first minted in 1792. New coins have been produced annually and they comprise a significant aspect of the United States currency system. Circulating coins exist in denominations of 1¢ (i.e. 1 cent or $0.01), 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, and $1.00.
Although coins have been a part of life for thousands of years, coin history in the United States is, of course, much more recent. Let’s take a quick look at the history of U.S. coins from the Colonial period until the present day. Along the way, we’ll also discuss denominations, coin design, and coin symbols.
