EXO initially debuted with twelve members which were separated into two sub-groups: EXO-K, a unit that focused on South Korean content which consisted of Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, Kai, and D.O. And the Chinese-focused unit EXO-M which included Xiumin, Lay, Chen, and former members Kris, Luhan, and Tao.

Pre-debut
In early 2011, SM Entertainment's founder Lee Soo-manannounced the company's plan to debut a new boy group, of which would be divided into two units that would promote simultaneously in South Korea and China by performing in both Korean and Mandarin. Prior to their official debut, EXO released two prologue singles, "What Is Love" and "History", on January 30, 2012, and March 9, 2012, respectively. EXO's debut single, "Mama", was released digitally on April 8, followed by the mini album of the same name the next day. The group's first full-length album, XOXO, was released on June 3, 2013, in both Korean and Chinese versions—of which were promoted by their respective sub-units.
