2024年5月13日 · Welcome to the Archdiocese of Atlanta. The Archdiocese of Atlanta was elevated on February 21, 1962, from the Diocese of Atlanta which was established on July 2, 1956. The archdiocese encompasses 21,445 square miles and comprises 69 counties in north and central Georgia.
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a Roman Catholic church located at 353 Peachtree Street NE in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The current building was completed in 1898. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and was designated a minor basilica in 2010.
Immaculate Conception’s present church was built between 1869 and 1880. The church became a Shrine in 1954 and later, in 1984, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, originally known as Saints Peter and Paul until 1898, was established in 1880 when Atlanta only had 37,409 souls.
The Archdiocese of Atlanta is a vibrant, diverse and rapidly growing Catholic community. As of 2020, there are 102 parishes and missions, 293 diocesan and religious priests, 46 seminarians, 18 archdiocesan Catholic schools, 1.2 million Catholics, and 7.5 million people in north central Georgia.
