2021年7月31日 · 出身自宜蘭農家子弟，游錫堃曾在紡織公司、信託公司任職，直到1975年12月為當時的黨外人士郭雨新助選，1977年擔任林義雄競選省議員的競選總幹事，最後也走向幕前，1981年參選省議員當選。 游錫堃受訪指出，投入省議員選舉，在1980年底就要開始準備，但當年2月28日發生林宅血案、4月18日美麗島事件宣判，社會氣氛肅殺，他仍決定抱視死如歸的心情參選。 進入省議會後，游錫堃與當時同為省議員的蘇貞昌、謝三升，由於問政犀利，被譽為「黨外鐵三角」。 游錫堃分享昔日軼事表示，現在大家在講的「番薯不驚落土爛，只求枝葉代代傳」，這段話是出自謝三升寫的詞，原詞是「番薯落土不驚爛」，後來他建議把「不驚」兩字往上提，變成「番薯不驚落土爛」。
