Liuqiu, also known by several other names, is a coral island in the Taiwan Strait about 13 kilometers (8 mi) southwest of the main island of Taiwan. It has an area of 6.8 km 2 (2.6 sq mi) and approximately 12,200 residents, the vast majority of whom share only 10 surnames.
The name of Ryūkyū (琉球) is strongly associated with the Ryukyu Kingdom, [10] a kingdom that originated from the Okinawa Islands and subjugated the Sakishima and Amami Islands. The name is generally considered outdated in Japanese although some entities of Okinawa still bear the name, such as the local national university .
The Ryukyu Kingdom[ a] was a kingdom in the Ryukyu Islands from 1429 to 1879. It was ruled as a tributary state of imperial Ming China by the Ryukyuan monarchy, who unified Okinawa Island to end the Sanzan period, and extended the kingdom to the Amami Islands and Sakishima Islands.
The island is approximately 106 kilometres (66 mi) long, an average 11 kilometres (7 mi) wide, [ 7] and has an area of 1,206.98 square kilometers (466.02 sq mi). It is roughly 640 kilometres (350 nmi; 400 mi) south of the main island of Kyushu and the rest of Japan. It is 500 km (270 nmi; 310 mi) northeast of Taiwan.
This family took the family name from the earlier rulers of the kingdom, the first Shō family, even though the new royal family has no blood relation to the previous one. " Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star " is an English lullaby. The lyrics are from an early-19th-century English poem written by Jane Taylor, "The Star". [ 1] . The poem, which is in couplet form, was first published in 1806 in Rhymes for the Nursery, a collection of poems by Taylor and her sister Ann.
