A classical Kuiper belt object, also called a cubewano (/ ˌ k juː b iː ˈ w ʌ n oʊ / "QB1-o"), is a low-eccentricity Kuiper belt object (KBO) that orbits beyond Neptune and is not controlled by an orbital resonance with Neptune.

Quaoar, a classical KBO discovered in 2002, is over 1,200 km across. Makemake and Haumea , both announced on 29 July 2005, are larger still. Other objects, such as 28978 Ixion (discovered in 2001) and 20000 Varuna (discovered in 2000), measure roughly 600–700 km (373–435 mi) across.
Classical KBO s typically have semi-major axes between about 42 and 48 AU and form the majority of objects detected so far in the Kuiper Belt. They typically have orbits of low eccentricity and inclination , suggesting that their orbits have not changed significantly since they condensed out of the solar nebula .
Classical Kuiper Belt Objects. Classical KBOs are those having orbits with modest eccentricities and semimajor axes roughly in the 40 to 47 AU range. They are defined as a group by their long-term stability - they simply never approach Neptune closely enough to have been ejected over the age of the Solar system.
