McGuire在借鑑了在 加拿大 多倫多 一年一度的勞動節後於1882年首次提出的 [3][4] 。 1887年， 俄勒岡 成為首個設立該節日的州。 到1894年美國總統 格羅弗·克利夫蘭 簽署法律使之正式成為聯邦假期時，已經有30個州確立了勞動節 [3][5] 。
