    An ectopic heartbeat is a harmless condition that occurs when something goes wrong with the heart's electrical system. It is more common in older people.

    The heart contains four main sections, called chambers, and electrical signals control your heartbeat which normally come from an area of cells known as the sinus node in the upper right atrium.     There are two main types of ectopic beats; premature atrial contractions (PACs) occur in upper chambers and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) occur in lower chambers with PACs being more common than PVCs.

    If you have ectopic beats, you may not notice any symptoms but if you do they include sensations such as fluttering or pounding chest sensations; triggers for ectopics include high blood pressure, lung disease, alcohol misuse etcetera .

    If your heart seems to miss regularly tell your doctor who may diagnose by listening to your heart or give tests like electrocardiogram (EKG), Holter monitor etcetera .

    Avoiding things that trigger it helps otherwise medication like beta-blockers or radiofrequency catheter ablation procedure may be suggested by doctor .
