The other side of the 18XX is the 1829 branch, consisting of 1829, 1829 Mainline, the three 1825 units, 1860 etc. I would not recommend 1860 as a learner's game, though it is perhaps my favourite of the 18XX. 1829 has a number oddities as well, especially in regard to surveyors.

Although you can play at least a couple games of Age of Steam in the same time it takes to play the average 18xx title, the two+ games of AoS does not even come close to adding up to an equivalent experience.
