18xx is the collective term used to describe a set of railroad-themed stock market and tile laying games. The 18xx set has two main branches: the 1829 branch (1829, 1825, 1853, and 1829 Mainline) and the 1830 branch (1830, 1856, 1870, etc). There are also a number of crossover games which sit somewhere between the two branches (eg 1860).

I recommend 18Ches for a few reasons. 1- It's a very simple 1830-style game, which will give you a good foundation on the system that most 18xx games are built upon. 2- It has a train export system, which will prevent a common issue with beginner games where no one wants to push the trains.

The other side of the 18XX is the 1829 branch, consisting of 1829, 1829 Mainline, the three 1825 units, 1860 etc. I would not recommend 1860 as a learner's game, though it is perhaps my favourite of the 18XX. 1829 has a number oddities as well, especially in regard to surveyors.

Although you can play at least a couple games of Age of Steam in the same time it takes to play the average 18xx title, the two+ games of AoS does not even come close to adding up to an equivalent experience.
