ANZ National Bank today announced that after almost ten years of operating ANZ and The National Bank in New Zealand, the two brands would be brought together as ANZ. ANZ National Bank CEO David Hisco said The National Bank brand would progressively be phased out over about two years from around the end of October.
In 1951, UBA and the Bank of Australasia merged to become the Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ Bank). In 1970, ANZ Bank merged with a third London-based bank, the English, Scottish and Australian Bank, to form ANZ Banking Group.
ANZ's arm in New Zealand is operated through a subsidiary company, ANZ National Bank, from 2003 to 2012, when it changed by ANZ Bank New Zealand upon merging the ANZ and National Bank brands. In March 2005, it formed a strategic alliance with Vietnam's Sacombank involving an acquisition of 10% of Sacombank's share capital .
A further, key, amalgamation of brands occurred in 2012 the National Bank of New Zealand, acquired in 2003, became ANZ. By 2016 banking on smart phones was well developed but payments weren’t. ANZ again led the field with Apple Pay, the first major Australian bank to give customers access to a new way to make a contactless payment – even more desirable in these COVID days.
Fast-forward a century to 1951 and The Bank of Australasia joined with Union Bank of Australia to form ANZ Bank. ANZ in turn merged in 1970 with English, Scottish and Australian Bank to become Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited – the largest merger in Australian banking history at the time.
