    The term neurosis has been in use since the 1700s to describe mental, emotional, or physical reactions that are drastic and irrational. Today, neurosis is not a stand-alone mental condition but falls under the umbrella of anxiety disorder.

    The line dividing normal from neurotic behaviors is intensity - neurotic thoughts and behaviors are so extreme they interfere with daily life while common ones do not.

    A neurotic personality may make you more prone to internalizing disorders such as depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder while delusions or hallucinations are symptoms of psychotic disorders where you lose touch with reality.
