概要. 1975年に開設された糖尿病センターを母体に、1978（昭和53）年に独立・開設された講座である。 糖尿病を中心に、脂質異常症、肥満、動脈硬化症、メタボリックシンドロームなど糖尿病・代謝疾患およびその種々の合併症すべてについて、卒前および卒後教育と基礎および臨床研究を担当している。 糖尿病は、インスリン作用不足の結果、慢性高血糖を特徴とする広範な代謝異常を起こし、網膜症、腎症、神経障害や種々の大血管障害を引き起こす、つまり全身の血管障害を引き起こす疾患である。 ますます増加する糖尿病患者に対し、糖尿病・代謝内科と糖尿病眼科は、臨床各科と緊密な連携を保ち、スタッフ一同、チーム医療の実践に努めている。
