1920年は東京女子医学専門学校が文部大臣から指定学校の認可を受けた年で、学校創立20年に当たります。 当時は指定学校に認可された医学専門学校を卒業すると、医術開業試験を受験しなくても無試験で医師になることができたため、指定学校認可は学校にとって節目となる非常に喜ばしい出来事でした。 この時、最上級生から校歌を作詞する案が出て全校生徒より歌詞を募集しました。 佳作となった作品を歌人の与謝野鉄幹に校正してもらったものが現在も歌い継がれている本学の校歌です。 原作者の生徒はついに名乗り出ることはありませんでした。 作曲は山田耕筰に依頼。
