Shen began his acting career in TCS (now Mediacorp) in 1995 after emerging the male winner of Star Search, a televised talent search competition. [1] In 2000, he joined SPH MediaWorks not long after the latter was established. In late 2004 SPH MediaWorks was merged into MediaCorp and Shen was one of the 20 artistes who rejoined MediaCorp.

He was born Shen Yuehuan (沈岳煥) on 28 December 1902 in the town of Fenghuang (then known as Zhen'gan) in west Hunan Province. In late adolescence he chose the name Shen Congwen.
